Where Are The Women? The Glaring Issue In Middle Management Preventing Greater Diversity In The Workplace

Diversity in the workplace is a non-negotiable in this day and age for companies and workers alike. In fact, the 2022 Mckinsey ‘Women in the Workplace’ report, the largest study of women in corporate America, found that women leaders, especially women of colour, are switching roles at the highest rates ever recorded due to the promises of greater flexibility, better DEI initiatives, and more inclusive workplaces.

Whilst the headline of this report is eye-catching, and it should make executives take a hard look at what they are offering women and other minorities, another pertinent piece of data for lower-level positions captured by this annual study may be more concerning.

The Mckinsey report found that in 2022, only 86 women were promoted to manager for every 100 men.

Falling At The First Hurdle

The Mckinsey report found that this year, only 86 women were promoted to manager for every 100 men. This blockade at the first chance of promotion to middle management causes a domino effect, as consequently there are then fewer female candidates being considered for senior-level positions.

While this is frustrating for women trying to progress, it’s also in businesses’ best interest to diversify their leadership. In fact, a study by BCG found that companies with above-average diversity in their management teams reported greater innovation revenue.

Instilling Diversity In The Workplace

Recognition And Consistency

Companies must not only identify the source of DEI issues but ensure that diversity in the workplace is something taken into account from entry-level to the boardroom. Recognising the positive work already occurring within the current workforce is essential, as, according to the Mckinsey report, 40% of women leaders say their DEI work isn’t acknowledged.

To build and sustain a diverse leadership pipeline, we need to support the minority to thrive in their roles and those in the majority, to lead more inclusively.

Leading With Inclusivity

Leaders must ensure inclusivity is at the forefront of decision-making, especially in hiring and promoting leaders. Affirming diversity in the workplace is not just about hiring the right people, it’s about supporting every worker to excel and grow in their roles, and giving everyone a chance to advance. Minorities should be able to flourish, and this must be celebrated and reinforced by the majority.

Early Coaching Intervention

Business coaching isn’t what it used to be. Gone are the 3-hour long group sessions on diversity that are there to keep up appearances. Implementing high-intensity, impactful training early and frequently not only shows dedication to diversity in the workplace but ensures your DEI message is heard and echoed throughout your workforce.
