Empowering people to grow and succeed has excited me since the beginning of my career in education.
My work always revolved around helping others until, in 2013, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma – an aggressive type of blood cancer. In an instant, my world was thrown into turmoil and I became entirely reliant on others to help me.
Two years of brutal treatment followed, culminating in a stem cell transplant. I was told at one point that my life would likely be measured in months rather than years. Throughout the toughest days, my family and friends stood with me, never letting me give up hope, and my stem cell donor – a great guy called Guy – showed what it is to be an awesome human.
Through these experiences, I learned a lot about empathy, compassion and perspective but more than anything, I learned that resilience goes far beyond the individual. When faced with a challenge, the power of knowing that we are not alone is immeasurable.
I’m based in Yorkshire with my family and I’m a keen cyclist, walker, wild swimmer (since before it became cool) and photographer; being in nature is where I’m most content. As a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society, I see the world through many lenses – a useful skill in work and play.
